B Corp Roundtable: Is hybrid working an enabler or hinderance to meeting our commitments as certified B Corps?

On Wednesday 30th March, we invited some of our UK B Corp Family to a Roundtable at The Ministry to celebrate B Corp Month!

The topic of the discussion was around “Is hybrid working an enabler or hinderance to meeting our commitments as certified B Corps?”

We were delighted to be joined by representatives from Forster Communications, Total Media Group, WHEB Asset Management LLP, JoJo Maman Bebe, Hilson Moran, F1 Recruitment, and Innocent Drinks (who were kind enough to supply the delicious refreshment for the event!).

The topic sparked great conversation, ideas, and facts, but the most eye-opening, yet not surprising finding was that even though we were all from different industries and company sizes, we are all in the same boat; Hybrid working 2.0 has just begun and most organisations are still grappling with how this cultural transformation can be successfully embedded within their respective companies.

Being B Corps, employee wellbeing is high on our agenda, we all shared our experiences around how employees were tackling new ways of working, its benefits on work/life balance, mental health and child care, but also on the flip side, the challenges around learning by osmosis and work structure.

The words ‘Boundaries’, ‘Flexibility’ and ‘Trust’ were mentioned in every topic discussed and it was agreed that we are all still in an experimental phase trying to make sure that these needs are met for both employees and employers.

From a workplace consultancy perspective, what’s clear is that if you’re only looking at Hybrid Working from a real estate and space perspective then you’re not going to solve it.

So is hybrid working an enabler or hinderance to meeting our commitments as certified B Corps? We think taking into account the barriers around diversity, inclusivity, accessibility, autonomy, and trust in a traditional working model; Hybrid working done in the right way can only help the move towards a fairer, more equitable, and sustainable society.
